This week while researching, I re-stumbled upon David Byrne’s Ted Talk, something I hadn’t gotten around to watching yet. He covers a variety of topics, but mainly the concept behind music resonating and being purposefully created for certain spaces, for example a cathedral with highly-reverberating ceilings versus an intimate beaten-up punk venue like CBGBs. He goes on to compare this idea to that of birds, and how their variety of calls around the world are individually adapted to their given habitat. This way of thinking, among other topics addressed in accompanying interviews (i.e. https://www.npr.org/2020/07/24/894686165/david-byrne-how-do-spaces-shape-the-music-we-make) got me thinking on how I’ll approach my capstone project, taking into account a post-COVID world and how live music can continue to be as intimate and hold the value it currently has, while incorporating accompanying immersive visual and spatial elements. To supplement this way of thinking, I’ve also went ahead and ordered David Byrne’s book How Music Works, which covers the above topics and much more with an insider perspective with a lifetime of experience. I’m excited to dive into more of these conceptual territories and highlight considerations I may not have initially known of to better apply to my research.
